California recently passed the Student Online Personal Information Protection Act (SOPIPA). I know my district and school have not relayed any information about this new law. This is very disheartening especially since I work for an online school. You would think our administration would be privy to all the new laws and regulations. The first step I believe my district needs to accomplish would be to get a lead teacher or team to be well-versed in SOPIPA to help interpret the requirements in our specific circumstances. This team would be able to create literature that would be comprehensive for all stakeholders. I would also have these lead teams articulate the law in an in-service to address any misconception or misunderstanding that stakeholders would have. We have a yearly round up at my school where students, parents and educators are mandated to show up. The round up was designed for signing up new and old students up for school again and giving parents any type of new information that has evolved through local, state and federal laws. This would be a great time to have a break out session to inform all stakeholders at least once a year about laws like SOPIPA and other important laws.
We live in a data driven world now, we use data in everyday decision making. Making data decisions is very common place weather you realize it or not. When I go and watch videos on YouTube there is a suggestion playlist for me because the data that has been collected by YouTube on me. One thing that just recently freaked me out was, I was driving home from picking up my daughter from school and my IPhone automatically told me how long it would take me to get back home. I guess it was collecting data on me and knew each day at this time I would be driving back home. So the role of data is everywhere. Just how successful businesses do all they can to collect data on us so they can make a more informed decision. We too must collect the proper data to make informed decision for our district, schools and students. Once we collect the data it is of the utmost importance that we know where it’s coming from and how it was collected so we can trust it and make informed decisions. After we validate data we must use it for our benefit. Student data has become increasingly significant because it allows teachers and administrators to efficiently measure student comprehension planes and aim for areas in need of development. By making data decisions you can also create more personalized learning plans, measure student improvement and gage the instructor’s effectiveness.
Business architecture is the way to go if you want to ensure you get where you said you wanted to go. I have heard so many horror stories about leadership and where it’s going it sometimes frightens me about the future state of our 21 century institution. Any school district or company can have a vison but who aids in making sure the vision can come to past? I have been in plenty of meetings for our school and school district and it’s very easy to generate mission statements and create visions for our institution but it’s very rare that they come to fruition. This can be to the fault of many different things. I believe one solution that can have a vast impact on us reaching our goals or vision is having a BA to get us where we need to be. The future state BA can aide in when necessary, they can adjust the vision to line up with newly gained insights and viewpoints. In order to define an ideal future state business architecture, we must have the correct stakeholders involved. This entails not only identifying the key stakeholders from the school setting but getting them to commit to contribute in a highly collaborative dialog.
After reflection on this week’s module I have concluded that we have a poor business framework. As I look through our website and make connections with different business departments we have at our district I have come to the conclusion that we are a bit unorganized. The district I work for is very small compared to others in our area but I’m sure with a strong BA it would benefit us none the less. As I was trying to gain information about different departments in our district I was constantly given wrong information about who does what and how different departments work. I can see how the lack of information that each department have on each other can be a problem. I can recall a day last year where the busses where three hour late because they did not know it was a minimum day. How does that happen? How does one of the most vital parts of your business structure have no idea of what is happening on a daily. Through this research I believe that our Business Architecture is not well developed. A good BA in a school setting will result in the best educational outcomes to students. This happens because BA can help schools realign their business processes, systems and resources throughout the school. To me it seems like we need to define the vision of our school better and give stakeholders a clearer and more precise strategy to give all stakeholders the best results possible. References:
